Thoughtful Thursday: 5 Ways to Avoid Bad Chi in Your Home

I first started looking into Feng Shui when I was trying to conceive a baby girl during my last pregnancy. Somewhere along the way I must have gotten my Feng crossed with my Shui because wouldn't you know I ended up being a Mom in Boyland, with 3 sons!

OK so maybe I got it all wrong when it comes to gender selection...BUT I do think there are some benefits to having a good "flow" or "chi" in your home. Having your space functional and beautiful can't be bad right?

Here are 7 ways to ward off bad energy and keep the good vibes freely flowing.

1. Don't have a blah entrance! Would you rather someone bring you a gift of a colorful array of delicious fruit, or a drab bowl of mushy oatmeal? Hint: There's only one right answer! When guests come to your door they should be greeted by warmth, color and inviting chi. So don't make the entrance to your home a dumping ground for book bags and smelly shoes. Create a space that draws in people and good fortune.

2. Don't have uncomfortable furniture. Nothing puts me more on edge then going to a friends home and sitting on a chair or sofa that feels cold or stiff. Furniture should be pleasant to sit on, not uncomfortable or rigid. The idea is have a room that makes your guests feel like they can kick off their shoes and curl up for a chat. (I like neutral colors and LOTS of pillows!)

3. Don't put yourself in a bad position. I always feel strange if I'm sitting in a room and my back is facing the doorway. Don't you? Looking over my shoulder can be very distracting when I'm trying to work, read, or sleep. It's like at any moment someone could sneak up behind me. Always situate your bed, chair or couch in a position where you have the power to see what's coming through the doorway, but are not directly across from it. This one step can make you feel more powerful and in control. In some cases that might mean moving your desk into the center of the room, away from the wall.

Position of Power

4. Don't Have Clutter. This one is BIG in my book. The least favorite part of my home is our kitchen island. It seems to be the place that collects the mail, keys, homework papers, snacks, and anything else that gets randomly put their. My most favorite part of my house....the kitchen island when its clean. The kitchen is usually the center of your home, so if that's neat and orderly then usually so is the rest of your home. Physical clutter can be a manifestation of stuck energy in our lives. If we have closets and drawers filled with unwanted or unnecessary items those things are blocking good energy from coming into our life. Each time you come across a wayward item ask yourself: Do I love it? Is it useful? Does it reflect who I am right now? If the answer is no, donate it, give it to a friend who will appreciate it, or trash it.
This is how my island usually looks
This is how it should look
5. Don't Forget About Nature. Whether its a vase of fresh flowers, a soothing fish tank or rock garden having natural surroundings will invigorate your chi. If your home is more modern you can connect to that energy by adding different textures, colors, and materials from the earth. This world has given us so many gifts, use them.

What a good idea about the seating arrangement in a living space. Makes me want to change around my living room so my chi is better balanced. Thanks
