Thoughtful Thursday: Tony Robbins, Awakening the Giant Within

My mother recently banned me from purchasing anymore self-improvement books, for fear that I was spending too much time searching for answers outside myself, when I should be looking within. While I know her opinions are valid, it's been about 3 months and I'm jonzin like a junkie looking for a fix.

I should really blame her for my relapse since she suggested I kill time at Barnes and Noble. That's like sending a gambler to the racetrack to just "look" at the horses, it was going to end with me getting what I wanted.

While my kids perused Super Hero Squad and The Hunger Games books, my gaze lingered toward a man some describe as a visionary and others a charlatan, Mr. Tony Robbins (or as he is now known as 'Anthony Robbins').

He has been the guiding force of Fortune 500 CEO's, heads of state, and professional athletes, all seeking advice and counsel for various issues. The title of the book that caught my eye was Awaken the Giant Within: How to Take Immediate Control of Your Mental, Emotional, Physical, and Financial Destiny! Now if that doesn't excite you, I don't know what will. I'm all about getting to the end result faster and more efficiently.

My best friend attended his seminars and always came back with a new glimmer in her eye and the momentum to move her in the right direction. Since I don't have the resources to dole out a few grand and take part in his transformative weekend, I decided a $16 supplement would be sufficient.

I've watched many of his videos, the first being his presentation during a TED (Technology, Entertainment,& Design) conference, where leading innovators gather to share ideas. The talk was less then 20 minutes long, but by minute 4 I was ready to Google every video available with Tony in it.

His passion and energy is infectious, but more importantly his in-your-face approach and crude language is a refreshing change from the soft, gentle delivery of most spiritual or motivational gurus. He got my attention.

I'm in the middle of creating the life I've always dreamed of. I've found my passion in holistic health and wellness. I've discovered my calling for supporting women through labor and delivery, as a doula. I know as long as I remain authentic and am of service to others, there is no limit to the success I can attain.

Thoughtful Thursday: Finding Faith in Yourself

Have you ever wondered, "Why is this happening to me?" The "this" is usually a set of difficult or sometimes even heartbreaking circumstances that have made their way into your life, wreaking havoc on your world.

I think we all have times in our life when we question God/Allah/the Universe/Mother Earth, what the greater purpose is for the daily suffering many of us encounter. We may believe that each hardship is a test to prove your faithfulness. We may view this imbalance as a coincidence, a random course of events, not predetermined or placed before us by some omniscient being. Or, perhaps, we believe that each manifestation of good, bad, or ugly is a direct result of our thoughts creating our reality.

The interview I watched yesterday confirmed, for me, the latter.

Marie Forleo
I've become a HUGE fan of Marie Forleo, an entrepreneur who has made it her mission to improve the hearts, minds, and pockets of women who are seeking independence in business. Her energy is infectious and her knowledge of what it takes to create the life you've always dreamed of is spot on.

I've been gorging on her YouTube videos for the last 2 weeks, soaking in each little tidbit and trying to figure out how I can apply it to my life and the hopeful success of Granolaville.com. All of her information is filled with the perfect balance of humor, candor, actionable items, and above all ...LOVE.

It should have been no surprise that she interviewed a WILDLY successful writer and entrepreneur, who created The Daily Love.com where he shares inspirational quotes from teachers, past and present, to over 500,000 subscribers and Twitter followers.

Mastin Kipp
Matsin Kipp, has had a varied, yet successful business career in his 28 years on earth. From creating the popular clothing line, Love Yourself Apparel, managing bands, writing for the Huffington Post, to most recently going on tour with......OPRAH's Life Class!

The guy has serious good fortune. Or does he?

In his interview with Marie, he talks about how only a few years ago he found himself in a really low place. He and his business partner had severed ties, investors backed out of his clothing company, his relationship with his girlfriend ended, he had gout in his foot ( gross old man infection), and lost his apartment.

Suffice to say, life was pretty shitty.

An ex-girlfriend's mother had once told him if he were ever in need of a place to stay her 8x8 pool house could be his. To a single guy, living in a cosy pool house in the Hollywood Hills seemed like a viable option. Though he was surrounded by the lush abundance of his new home, he himself , felt quite deflated.

One day, while talking to the Universe, as he often did, Mastin said, "You created EVERYTHING. Why couldn't you hook me up with free rent at the Chateau Marmont?"

The answer he got back made me rewind the video just to hear it again:

"This room is the size of your faith. But it is enough."

Wow. Seriously wow.

After hearing those words, my head began to race. Yes, I do think we are a reflection of what we believe. For Mastin, his world had literally shrunken down to the bare minimums. I mean, he was running an internet company from his laptop with no internet, only "stolen" Wifi. He didn't have much going right at all.

I would assume such life-changing events like losing your home, companion, and livelihood is enough to shake anyone's faith in themselves, and in God.

Mastin's immediate surroundings were like a mirror to what he felt inside. He knew there was prosperity out in the world, he saw it daily from his pool house view. But, perhaps, he didn't have enough faith in himself to see all the possibilities to re-build his life.

Instead of giving up, he surrendered to his current situation and kept his eye on the prize. He was literally tweeting and emailing to live. Though he couldn't foresee exactly how his business would succeed, his incrementally growing faith in himself would sustain him.

What does this mean for you?

Look at your home, your job...hell even your car. Do the things in your life reflect what you truly feel you are worthy of?

Most of us might not want to admit it, but if you are driving a busted car, working at a dead-end, thankless job, are letting others treat you badly, or can't seem to take your business "to the next level" it may be because you have lost faith in your unlimited abilities.

We have to believe we are worthy, have faith in ourselves and our path in order to see the road ahead, not the other way around.

Don't be afraid to live out your dreams or strive for impossible goals. All things are possible if you have faith in yourself.

Thoughtful Thursday: 3 Steps to Accomplish Anything

Getting started is difficult. So difficult it took me 20 minutes to write that first sentence. It didn't help that my husband decided to "check in" as I was typing the words, or that my mom then called as soon as I hung up with my husband, or that my infant son has found his voice and it sounds something like a prehistoric pterodactyl.

But again..... I digress.

Accomplishing anything is process. Whether it's writing an article, finishing that scarf you've been knitting since last winter, or starting a dreaded "diet", you've got to get through 3 steps to feel like you are gaining any traction.

First, you must set your intention. My goal today was to write this article before my 15 month old woke up from his nap. Second, you must be motivated. I knew that if I didn't jump on the opportunity, without being interrupted by Blue's Clues, I would get behind in my self-imposed daily writing schedule. Third, you must persevere. Through distractions, self doubt, and road blocks the ability to keep going is the most important step in this trinity of success.

1. Set an Intention

There have been numerous books over the past few years, including one of my favorites by Dr. Wayne Dyer called The Power of Intention, in which the idea that our perception of what could happen greatly affects the outcome of what will happen.
“When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” ~ Dr. Wayne Dyer
Anyone that looks like 'Mr. Clean' has got to know something right?

Devising a purposeful goal is a key step that many of us forget. Instead of anticipating or planning the experience we would like to have, we dive straight in, let the chips falls where they may, and wonder why our lives don't feel within our control.

I've been guilty of this oh so many times, especially when in a disagreement. Instead of thinking about what I say to the other person, before I say it, I jump in, guns blazing. If I had just approached the situation from the intention that I was going to hear the other person out and not say anything to deliberately hurt them, I could take comfort in knowing I was coming from a good place, even if they didn't agree with what I was saying.
“When the choice is to be right or to be kind, always make the choice that brings peace” ~ Dr. Wayne Dyer
Whether you tell yourself you can do something or you can't, you will always be right, so choose whichever will get you to your goal.

2. Get Motivated

Finding the energy to get yourself going can seem damn near impossible when faced with a big task (or a little one like getting myself off the couch). I sometimes tell myself if I don't start something, then I won't be discouraged when I don't finish it. How ass-backward is that!?

Your motivation to accomplish any goal has to be less painful then the alternative. Being in shape as opposed to being winded walking up the stairs, playing it safe or taking a risk, staying in a damaging relationship or venturing out on your own...its all about which motivates you to experience the least amount of pain.

For me, the alternative to becoming a better writer, supportive Doula and fulfilling my career aspirations is to waste the talent and passion I was blessed with. Frankly, that scares the shit out of me.

My drive is fueled by not wanting to squander my potential with inaction. So just START. Whatever you've been putting off, start it now. I've found once I get rolling the momentum builds and each task becomes easier than the last.

So get pumped! Imagine all the positive ways your life will change once you do that thing you've been "meaning to do". Visualize the smile on your face and pride in your step when you can say I did it!

3. Persevere, Persevere, Persevere.
For changes to be of any true value, they've got to be lasting and consistent. ~ Tony Robbins
Consistency. It might as well be a four-letter word to me. But really is there any other way to make the changes we seek, other then doing that thing ALL the time? (I'm still hoping there is a loophole to this). Step one and two I've got down to a science, but step three is often where I fall flat on my face right into a steaming pile of self-pity and disappointment.

Anyone who achieves results, in any aspect of their life, does so because of the constant choice to make it happen. I think most of us start off with SUPER high enthusiasm but find it difficult to maintain that level of throughout our busy lives. We let other responsibilities momentarily deter us, swearing its "only this once".  Then we make lame excuses as to why we can't do it as much, but we're still tooootallly committed. Before you know it we've given up because doing something half-assed makes us feel worse then not doing it all.

In order to make lasting changes make sure whatever you are focusing on is truly important to YOU. If your goal is to get in shape before the summer swim suit season then pick a regime that fits into YOUR life, not the life of someone who has hours to spend at the gym.

If you want to eat healthier start by cutting one food that you know you can live without. (For me its salty potato chips). Making small changes is a lot easier to stick to than saying, "I'm giving up all carbs, dairy, gluten, sugar, and meat!"

Giving myself doable goals to get to milestones also gives me an incentive to keep going. Otherwise, I get so overwhelmed with the "big picture" I STOP like a deer in headlights.

If you DO find yourself getting stuck, don't beat yourself up. Give yourself credit for what you've done, dust yourself off, and keep it movin'. The more you dwell on your mistakes in the past the harder it is to see your achievements in the future.

Whatever it is you want do, its not beyond your reach. We all have amazing potential if we just give ourselves a chance.
